Personally...I think your IR shots are great!
What made the biggest difference for me was getting rid of the filter. I had my 350D converted to a dedicated IR. For the color shots, I swap the red/blue channels, and then I usually do a little dodging around the whites. For the b/w shots, I just convert to b/w usually. Well, with basic levels, contrast adjustments. Sometimes I do a little dodging/burning with the b/w too.
